Trinity College Choir is saddened to hear about the recent death of the American composer Stephen Paulus.

Stephen Layton had the pleasure of collaborating with Stephen Paulus during our recording of American a cappella music “Beyond All Mortal Dreams”.  The CD featured three of Paulus' pieces, including Hymn to the Eternal Flame, drawn from the composer's sacred Holocaust memorial Oratorio, To be Certain of the Dawn.

“Stephen Paulus has left us many beautiful choral works that will be sung for years to come”, says Stephen Layton.  “I will never forget the first time I encountered his Hymn to the Eternal Flame - a simple, heartfelt setting with a wafting soprano solo.  For one so successful, he was really quite modest and very generous in his enthusiasm for our recording. His encouragement of the choral scene in Minnesota, and the way that this reached out beyond the USA, is his wonderful legacy”.
