Robert Quinney

Back to recordings list

"The programme begins with the D minor Toccata and Fugue, to which Quinney brings a remarkable freshness thanks to his flamboyant decorations. In the C minor Passacaglia and Fugue, meticulously registered, his articulation is exquisitely controlled."
The Sunday Times

"You can feel Bach delighting in that dancing pedal part and Robert Quinney brings a lightness and improvisatory touch to the performance that seems spot on to me. It's sometimes played with such earnest heaviness that it can crush the life out of the Toccata's verve - not here."
BBC Radio 3 CD Review

"Quinney's Bach gets to the heart of the music with refreshing clarity and a communication born of genuine understanding. Bring on the next volume soon, please."
Gramophone, Gramophone Choice

"This is quite brilliant organ playing, with the most thrilling account of the D minor Toccata and Fugue I have ever heard. It is also superbly recorded."
International Record Review

This album, which was recorded at Trinity College, Cambridge, on the beautiful Metzler Organ, features a number of virtuosic works from Bach's early years including one of the most famous pieces of organ music in the repertory - the Toccata and Fugue in D minor (BWV 565). The disc also includes the Toccata and Fugue in F (BWV 540) and the Passacaglia (BWV 582) - one of Bach's most well-known and important organ works. Robert Schumann described the variations of Passacaglia as 'intertwined so ingeniously that one can never cease to be amazed.'
