Martin Sonnen


Martin Sonnen, born in 1980, first trained as an IT specialist and worked in this profession for one and a half years. He received his pre-vocational musical education with Cantor Bert Schmitz in Dormagen. At the beginning of the winter semester 2004/2005 he studied the course of Catholic church music, which he completed in February 2009 with the completion of the diploma at the Robert Schumann Music College. After graduating, he deepened his knowledge through postgraduate studies focussing on the subjects of organ literature, organ improvisation and choral conducting (organ: Prof. Stefan Schmidt, Würzburg; choral conducting: Prof. Anders Eby, Stockholm / Prof. Raimund Wippermann, Düsseldorf). He completed these postgraduate studies in February 2012. Supplementary to the studies he visited master courses in the various areas of church music (Int. Altenberger organ academy). From June 2005 to February 2009 he was organist of the parish church of St. Peter in Düsseldorf-Friedrichstadt while studying. From March 2009 to April 2012 he was employed in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cologne as a pastoral area musician in Grevenbroich. Since May 2012 he has worked as Cantor at St. Andreas, as well as coordinating musician in Korschenbroich. In addition, he was appointed by the city of Korschenbroich as artistic director of the international organ festival and as jury chairman of the international organ competition at St. Andreas. Further to these activities he undertakes a busy concert schedule in Germany and abroad, both as a soloist and as an accompanist, including for services broadcast on radio and television.
