Organ Music from Cambridge, Vol.3
This LP album preserves the sound of the pre-1976 Trinity organ as it would have been heard shortly before its replacement by the modern > Metzler. At the time of this recording, Trinity’s instrument had remained “virtually untouched since the last major rebuild (by Harrison and Harrison) in 1913”, while its case and elements of its pipework were the surviving work of Bernard ‘Father’ Smith (1630-1708). Audibly on its last legs, wheezing air leakage from various parts of its construction, the organ was also becoming challenging to play, with two separate internal mechanisms resulting in a different speed of speech between the manuals.
Its deficiencies notwithstanding, Richard Marlow’s recital reveals the old Trinity organ as an instrument of dramatic power and contrast across a dynamically wide-ranging programme. A particular highlight is the splendid solo Tuba stop, exhibited to great effect in the Fanfare by Percy Whitlock.
