Byrd, William: Senex puerum portabat

Senex puerum portabat (1605)

Senex puerum portabat:
puer autem senem regebat:
quem virgo peperit,
et post partum virgo permansit:
ipsum quem genuit adoravit.

The old man [Simeon] carried the young child,
but the young child was the old man’s King.
Him did the Virgin bear,
and from henceforth a virgin remained:
and Him whom she had borne, she adored.

Words: Alleluia verse for the Feast of the Purification
trans. adapt from Richard Runciman Terry (1865–1938)
Music: William Byrd (1540–1623)
