Handel - Dettingen Te Deum - Classic FM Magazine

Time was when Trinity College entrusted its musical worship to male voices of variable quality.  The admission of women students in the mid 1970s and the far-sighted work of music director Richard Marlow propelled Trinity’s choir far up the Cambridge choral league.  Marlow’s successor, Stephen Layton, is clearly focused on the choir’s further development, as this rip-roaring Handel disc amply demonstrates.  There’s no want of youthful vigour here, expressed in glorious technicolour at salient points in the martial Dettingen Te Deum and Zadok the Priest.  Yet it’s the disciplined refinement of the music making that delivers the purest pleasure.  Recommended.
